Taste of a Gentleman: Dogfish Head Miles Davis’ Bitches Brew

Look: Black, like old motor oil. Aggressive pour generates a large head which is also a dark brown (interesting). The head dissipated a little quicker than I expected and didn’t leave anything besides spots on the glass.

Some hints of chocolate in the nose. Nothing really notable (I have a bit of a cold though).

Pretty good taste. Mostly an exceptionally dark chocolate and coffee. When cold finishes with alcohol warming the palate, this becomes less notable. Also as it warms the notes of honey come through, although generally over powered by the more bitter notes of the beer.

Bottom line is this is a solid imperial stout, but probably over priced. Spend your money on a different entry into the genre.

So notes from my first two pumpkin beers of the year.  The Harpoon UFO Pumpkin beer trends towards a traditional pumpkin spice beverage with a lot of all spice and anise up front and that raw unfiltered taste (as advertised UFO stands for Unfiltered Offering).  Wasn’t bad.  I was more impressed with the Southern Tier Pumpking though.  While the anise, and all spice are certainly on the palate, they are more of a compliment to a large vanilla presence.  It comes in a 25 oz bottle and is almost 9% by volume.  Makes for an interesting afternoon with an empty stomach…
